Joe Barry Biography

On July 5, 1970, Joe Barry, an American football coach who serves as the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League, was born.

Prior to this, he served as the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator from 2007 to 2008, the Washington Commanders’ defensive coordinator from 2015 to 2016, and the Los Angeles Rams’ assistant head coach and linebackers coach from 2017 to 2020.

Barry has also served as an assistant coach in the past for the San Diego Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and San Francisco 49ers.

Barry’s father is former coach Mike Barry.

Barry played linebacker for the University of Michigan from 1989 to 1990 before moving on to the University of Southern California.

As a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Southern California (USC), Barry began his coaching career in 1994.

In 1996, Barry started working as the linebackers coach at Northern Arizona University.

Prior to accepting a comparable job at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 1999, he held that position from 1996 to 1998.

He has worked as an assistant for several teams under several coaches.

Barry was signed by the San Francisco 49ers in 2000 to work with defensive coordinator Jim Mora and head coach Steve Mariucci as a defensive quality control coach.

To coach their linebackers under defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and head coach Tony Dungy, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Joe Barry in 2001.

Barry and Kiffin were both kept on by Jon Gruden, the Buccaneers’ new head coach, in 2002.

The Buccaneers competed in Super Bowl XXXVII that year and defeated the Oakland Raiders to claim their first championship.

Barry was appointed defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2007 by head coach Rod Marinelli, who is also Barry’s father-in-law.

He returned to Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a second stint in 2009.

Barry was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 26, 2010, and he signed a deal to serve as their linebackers coach.

In order for Barry to work as the linebackers coach at the University of Southern California (USC), it was revealed that day that the Jaguars had released him from his contract.

His time with the Green Bay Packers is what really made him so popular.

He developed veteran linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, who was signed as a free agent for a $2 million contract, to First-Team All-Pro accolades in his first season leading the unit.

Barry is married to Chris Marinelli Barry, and the two of them have four kids: sons Sam and Nick and daughters Camryn and Lauren.
