Annie Wersching, best known for her roles in Star Trek: Picard, 24 and The Last of Us video game, has sadly passed away at 45. According to Cinema Blend, her death was first reported online via a GoFundMe page that was launched by close friend and fellow actress, Ever Carradine. Although Wersching was diagnosed with cancer in 2020, she continued to act through mid-2022.

One of the star’s final and arguably most memorable roles was the Borg Queen in the second season of Star Trek: Picard. Her character is one of many iterations of the leader of the Borg Collective. The character has previously appeared in several other Star Trek series including The Next Generation, First Contact, and Voyager.

Star Trek: Picard is a follow-up series to both 1987’s The Next Generation and the 2002 motion picture Star Trek: Nemesis. The show centers on Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in the next chapter of his life. Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Jeri Ryan, Evan Evagora, Kay Bess, and Isa Briones also star on the series.

Annie Wersching made her first appearance as the Borg Queen in the second episode of Star Trek: Picard Season 2. Titled “Penance,” the episode finds Picard transported to an alternate timeline in the year 2400 where he must face one final trial orchestrated by his longtime nemesis Q (John de Lancie). Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski, the episode premiered on March 10, 2022.

Wersching appeared as the Cyborg leader in several more episodes of the hit series, with the second season’s ninth episode “Hide and Seek” marking her final showing as the character. In the episode, Picard must face the ghosts of his past when he and his crew are attacked by a new incarnation of an old enemy. Meanwhile, Seven (Ryan) and Raffi (Hurd) face Jurati (Pill) in a final showdown.

Of course, fans of Anna Wersching are well aware that long before she was cast as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: Picard, the actress previously played a different character on an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise. She portrayed the character Liana on the 20th episode of the show’s first season titled Oasis. The role marked her television debut.

The shocking news of Wersching’s passing has been met with an outpouring of condolences from the cast and crew of Star Trek: Picard. Series stars Jeri Ryan, Allison Pill, Isa Briones, and Michelle Hurd took Instagram to pay their respects and share photos they had previously captured with the actress. Showrunner Terry Matalas took to Twitter to offer his condolences to Wersching’s family.

Over the course of her career, Wersching accumulated nearly 50 credits as a performer. Aside from her final roles on the television shows Star Trek: Picard and The Rookie, she had prominent roles on series like The Vampire Diaries, Runaways, Timless, and Bosch. She also won a BTVA (Behind the Voice Actors Awards) for her voicework as Tess in the hit 2013 video game The Last of Us.

It’s undoubtedly tragic and Anna Wersching is survived by her husband Stephen and their three sons Freddie, Archie, and Ozzie. Our deepest condolences are with her family and friends during this difficult time. Hopefully, the touching tributes from the actress’ family, friends, and former colleagues continue to flood the web.
