Those Christmas gift catalogs
You know the ones like Harry and David or Swiss Colony.
Are they worth the money? Assorted fruits or sweets like petit fours and Yule Log cakes.

They send some nice fruit, but like all gift items they're overpriced.
If I were well off, I would be signing up for the fruit-of-the-month club.

The Harry & David pears are GREAT. Every time someone sends them to me they are ripe and juicy and sweet. Whenever I buy pears from the the market they suck.

I always question how fresh the cakes are, I would think the baked good type stuff you would be better off getting fresh locally. I once ordered some of the David's cookies they were raving about on HSN and they were blah. Candy I think you would be okay.

I had an otherwise reasonably intelligent work colleague who lived for the Sunnyland Farms catalogue with its array of nuts, nut samplers, candies with nuts, and sweets with nuts. It was a happy fucking day when the Sunnyland Farms catalogue arrived, so many product possibilities and the catalogue copy entranced her. How wonderful it would be, she mused, to work at Sunnyland Farms as, say, director of advertising copy, turning the phrases and fine tuning the words that go into an old-fashioned but quite mundane catalogue (it was no J. Peterman catalogue.) It was as though her usual practicality flew out the door when she reached for the catalogue in her mailbox.
She did, in retrospect, also like those giant blow-up lawn santas and reindeer and Halloween shit that trashed up lawns in America's less tony suburbs, the isn't-it-ironic visual pollution of the bright young set of bright enough to have gone to university but not bright enough to have seen any benefit of the experience - aside from the blow-up lawn snowmen and the Sunnyland Farms catalogue of pecan treats.

Well off and well educated people have bad taste just as often as anyone else.
Due to their status, it's more that no one will tell them though.
