She also held the position of First Assistant United States Attorney from 1981 to 1983.

President Ronald Reagan nominated Maryanne Trump Barry to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey in 1983. Confirmed by the United States Senate in October 1983, Barry began her service on the district court, demonstrating a reputation for being a tough judge with a commanding presence in her courtroom.

Her transition to the Court of Appeals marked a continued journey in federal judiciary service. Throughout her career, Barry presided over significant cases, displaying an unwavering commitment to the principles of justice. 

In 2018, a New York Times investigation alleged that Barry, along with her father and siblings, engaged in fraudulent and illegal activities to limit estate tax and gift tax liability related to Fred Trump’s real estate enterprises. Throughout her brother Donald Trump’s presidency, Maryanne Trump Barry maintained relative silence publicly. However, in August 2020, her niece, Mary L. Trump, revealed audio recordings in which Barry sharply criticized the president.
